Mistral Large 4 launches in preview, weights due this month
Mistral released Large 4 as a public API preview on 6 October 2026. This is late news: earlier checks missed it, and one roundup claim about it sat unverified until now. Several outlets and Mistral's own listing now agree it happened.
It is a very large model. Sources split on the size: some say 1 trillion parameters with 49 billion active, others 1.05 trillion with 52 billion active. It takes text and images and outputs text. Mistral's docs list a 1M-token context window, while Vals lists 512k.
Reported list pricing is $1.36 per million input tokens and $4.18 per million output tokens, with a launch sale at half that. The end date of the sale is not stated.
Open weights. Mistral has promised the weights by the end of October. One outlet gives 27 October, but Mistral has not committed to that date, and the licence has not been named.
Independent results are modest. Vals scores it 48.05%, 32nd of 44 models, strongest on legal and finance agent tasks and weak on terminal coding (22.73%). Artificial Analysis gives it 38 on its Intelligence Index, behind open models including GLM-5.3 and Kimi K3. Mistral's own headline claims are on security: 82% on a vulnerability reproduce-and-patch test and 93% on Cybench. Those figures are Mistral's, as relayed by third parties.
So it does not move the frontier, and whether it changes what is cheap depends on the licence and the weights landing.
